Our purpose is to help Australians claim their superannuation TPD benefits and raise awareness about this little known insurance benefit.
TPD Helpline Australia helps people all over Australia claim their superannuation TPD benefits. Thousands of Australians are unaware of their rights and TPD insurance claim benefits even though they are eligible. We started off as a Facebook page (Total and Permanent Disability Awareness Page – TPD Australia) in 2016.
Raising awareness was our main goal. Interactions on the page grew and it became apparent that thousands and thousands of Australians were discovering their rights to make a TPD claim via our Facebook page. Many people turned to us for help. A network developed and we became the go to experts for TPD Claims all over Australia; TPD Helpline Australia.
TPD assessments take into account your entire wellbeing (physical, psychological, illnesses and other health conditions). Below we explain how this relates to TPD assessments. We help shed light on how your doctors and GP’s assess your TPD eligibility so you can make TPD insurance claims.
Total and permanent disability (TPD) is an insurance benefit which covers members when they are unable to work due to an injury or illness. TPD benefits are paid out once the member satisfies the TPD definition specific to their superannuation policy. To qualify for total and permanent disability insurance claims, usually this means proving that you are unable to return to your usual occupation or anything within your education, training and experience (your work history/ resume).
Your GP is usually your first port of call. Many GP’s take the wrong approach when attempting to help patients. It is vital your GP knows how to assess you in light of the correct TPD insurance claim requirements. We have a large network of experienced GP’s all over Australia who are worked up in TPD assessments and TPD insurance in Australia. Each superfund and insurer have their own medical reports/questionnaires which need to be completed for an assessment to take place. On top of this, medical records and clinical notes are required to support your total and permanent disability insurance claims. Sometimes, specialists such as occupational physicians are required to further determine your prospects of returning to work in light of your injuries and health conditions.
Physical Injuries do not need to be linked to a work accident like a workers compensation claim. There is no requirement to prove how an injury happened whether it be in a car accident, a slip and fall in a shopping centre or at home for a TPD claim.
The fact you have a physical injury and it prevents you from working is acceptable. It’s important that your injuries are documented or treated by a GP. But we are still able to have you assessed if you have not been a regular visitor to doctors over your life.
A common error GP’s make is to opine you can be retrained or return to a less physically demanding job in a different field.
The easiest way to explain this misconception is through the brick layer example. A man has been a bricklayer his whole life. He injures his back and can no longer bend over or carry weight. His GP writes to the superfund saying his patient can work in a call centre or in an office where he can sit idle without aggravating his injuries.
It may be true that he can retrain and that the brick layer is capable of this. But it has no bearing on the TPD assessment and ruins any chances of the bricklayer making a successful TPD insurance claim.
Avoid GP’s who work with work cover as often the possibility of returning to work in the future is always 100% and your TPD claim will not go anywhere. In this case, it’s best to double check via our TPD insurance helpline to get the most reliable advice.
Mental illness in all walks of life struggles to be recognised with certainty due to its invisible and sometimes enigmatic nature (one day you feel well and the next you’re at your lowest). Insurance companies and superannuation funds feast on this uncertainty and the possibility of recovery.
The sometimes drawn out process in TPD insurance claims and the need to attend psychologists and psychiatrists play a role in almost everyone turning you away when it comes to supporting a TPD claim. Doctors can be reluctant to sign off due to the possibility of recovery and solicitors refuse to get involved due to all of the above.
TPD Helpline Australia is a beacon of light for those suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD or other psychological issues. We understand the nature of psychological injuries and TPD claims and the everyday struggle.
Applicants with specific health conditions and illnesses find it difficult to get a GP to support their total and permanent disability insurance claims. The likelihood of recovery, if your illness is not terminal, is usually a hurdle too high for most GP’s and specialists, with little TPD experience, to overcome.
This is simply due to the doctor not being aware of the proper guidelines. We liaise with your various doctors, sharing with them key criteria on how they need to view your claim as well as providing them with an overview of your TPD insurance claim.
There are various specific illnesses and health conditions sometimes referred to as ‘critical illnesses’ which some superfunds list in their policies.
Retail life insurance is cover purchased directly from an insurance provider with the help of a financial / insurance adviser. You would be aware that you have this cover as your premiums are higher. When securing retail life insurance cover, the insurer will need to review your medical records to provide you with the appropriate cover based on your previous and current medical conditions. Certain health conditions may be excluded from your cover and it’s vital you review this with your financial adviser before moving forward to know under which conditions you’re covered and not covered for. Claim assessments under retail life insurance differ from the usual superannuation TPD insurance claims.
Insurance of this nature covers a portion of your monthly salary usually for up to two years or up until you reach retirement age (65). For a total and permanent disability insurance assessment to take place, the superfund will require medical records and payslips and/or bank statements. We can run an income protection claim alongside a TPD claim.

Unfortunately, TPD law and claims have been neglected by most personal injury and compensation law firms and solicitors across Australia. An overwhelming number of people have been eligible to make a TPD claim however their solicitors have been ignorant or incapable of making such a claim so have not raised it with their clients. This means people are waiting sometimes 10 or more years before being made aware of their right to claim via TPD Helpline Australia.
Some claimants, after becoming aware of their eligibility will direct their current compensation solicitors to handle it for them rather than via the experts at TPD Helpline. It’s important to note that a TPD claim is not a claim for compensation, hence the need for solicitors experienced in TPD and equity law. It’s like asking a solicitor who specialises in criminal law to do your tax returns.
Australian law firms also refer their clients directly to TPD Helpline for fast and efficient service.
As soon as you have been off work for over 3 months due to injury, illness or a health condition you are either eligible or likely to be eligible soon. It’s never too early to contact us to get prepared. Your superfund will not alert you to your right to claim TPD.
The overcharging of fees by super funds just to maintain accounts led the federal government to pass a law to protect peoples’ superannuation monies. This led to the Federal Government bringing in new legislation. The legislation required superfunds to close a member’s account if there had not been contributions for 16 months. Ultimately, this led to many people unknowingly forfeiting TPD insurance.
Although it had the desired effect of saving individuals from paying fees on multiple superannuation accounts, more importantly it had a disastrous effect on peoples’ active insurance and whether they were covered for total and permanent disability insurance at the time they stopped work.
In an already complicated minefield of restrictive conditions hidden in thousand page policies and heavy handed insurance tactics, it now became supremely important to have the right strategy when making a TPD insurance claim. It also put the onus on the individual to keep their superannuation accounts in order and by making uninformed choices many people unintentionally cancelled their insurance cover which previously would have remained automatically.
Prior to the new laws, many individuals were able to make multiple TPD claims on their active superannuation accounts.
Our efforts to raise awareness around TPD are more important than ever.
We’ve found most solicitors across Australia simply don’t know how to get TPD claims approved. The other problem is advice telling their clients they don’t have a claim when in fact they do. Regardless of the situation with your solicitor, if you have not been able to work due to an injury or illness, you have a right to claim TPD. Whether your solicitor thinks your injury is minor is irrelevant. Get a second opinion from us.
Some GP’s lack confidence in completing TPD assessments or simply refuse to get involved in superannuation and insurance claims. We have a network of GP’s and specialists who are highly experienced in helping people with TPD insurance claims. A lack of experience on the part of your solicitor and liaising effectively with your treating doctor is also a common issue.
